说明:: The Penny Red, issued in 1841, succeeded the Penny Black and continued as the main type of postage stamp in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until 1879, with only minor changes to the design during that time. The colour was changed from black to red because of difficulty in seeing a cancellation mark on the Penny Black; a black cancel was readily visible on a Penny Red.

These Penny Reds were printed using the same die as the Penny Black (Die I), but on bluish paper watermarked with a small crown. The first plates (Plates 12-131) continued to use the initial alphabet letters (alphabet 1). This was changed to alphabet 2 in the later plates (plate 132 to plate 177). A total of 1,867,141,200 were printed from Plates 12 to 131, and 577,102,080 from Plates 132 to Plates 177. This explains why these stamps are not rare even today.
