How can we improve the Stamps catalogue?(Update: 7-Feb)

I generally agree with one reservation: it's okay to have a long description field including additional information and fill in the details in the major fields as it doesn't harm those not interested in this information.

Additional information is only harmful when it makes it harder to understand what's going on so having 20 stamps which are unneeded variants. Please DO MIND that as collectors manage their personal collection, it does make sense to have proper variants as different items on Colnect. Now what is "proper variant" and what is "unneeded variant" is left for you to decide.

That is absolutely fine for me, too, ...unless the long Description field showing in the two-column items list ends up extending too much down the item's data, often creating an unpleasant view. It would be ideal to show only the first, or second, line(s) of the Description field in that page, and the whole content only in the single item page. By the way, the Expiry date, Print run, and maybe even the Size field should be visible in the inside page only, I reckon.

As for other general information, I agree it does not harm anyone. Yet, I think it would help to know in which cases that piece of information makes the difference among varieties. Of course, having an extra flag showing that information in bold (where it does make the difference) would be the cherry on the cake, but I admit the Similar feature does a similar thing and is already implemented.

I think that description to do that when the minimum information to small currents or fault offsets enormous impression and current; different colors etc ...

Personally I tried on stamps of France to a maximum of information on small varieties.

A collector often has the same stamp multiple copies and small information may enable him to find a stamp with a slight difference that does not stamp much more expensive. A philatelist is always happy when he finds a small difference on a stamp

Je pense que dans description il ne faut mettre que le minimum d'informations quand à des petits défauts courants ou des décalages d'impression énorme et courant; des couleurs différentes etc...

Personnellement j'ai essayé sur les timbres de France de mettre un maximum de petites infos concernant les variétés.

Un collectionneur possède souvent le meme timbre en de nombreux exemplaires et les petites informations peuvent lui permettre de trouver un timbre avec une légère différence qui ne rend pas le timbre beaucoup plus cher. Un philatéliste est toujours heureux quand il trouve une petite différences sur un timbre

The description field can go as long as you'd like and (if I remember correctly) is trimmed in list view.

About hiding some fields in list view - mostly people requested that they all become visible. In the future, we'll probably allow advanced personal customizations.

Thanks friends. It seems that we can agree about the way we add variants.

It is also important that on list view the description field is not too large. It may contain a lots of information for those who need it but it must not be too long in list view.

About the view: I think we have different opinions what should be seen in list view and what on sigle item page and what should be on the single item view. Personal customization might be the right way, I think. There are some information I don't need, but I understand that we need and want different kind of knowledge of stamps; that's why personalized views might be an exellent idea.

I think that it should be comfortable for everybody if, among the lists of collectors, there is also the list of the alone premium members.

The motive for which I ask this application is that, to make the swaps, it is very comfortable to consult first the availabilities of the premium members that has the possibility to create personalized lists and to read the personalized lists of the other premium members.

In the catalog there are many stamps that don't have image (Front Picture Id = 0).

I sail in internet (and there are certainly many people as me) and I often succeed in finding the image corresponding to the postage stamp.

For this I recommend to insert in the list" Catalog" (where we can found "Countries", "Emissions", "Formats", etc) the list "without image", in which there are all the postage stamps with "Front Picture Id" = 0.

In such way it will be very easier the job for the one that looks for the images in internet.

It would be nice, now that we have a Variant field and we can show all varieties of a stamp in the same page, to highlight the differences found for each item: design, perforation, colour shade, watermark, printing method, ... (one or more for the same item). It would be sufficient to display the related field name in bold to capture the attention of the collector (e.g. Perforation: 13¼x12¾).

I want to give a suggestion to stimulate collectors.

Colnect may guarantee to collectors a month of free subscription as premium members for every 200 or 250 stamps added to the database.
