Following on from the Year of the Rooster in 2017, a sign of fidelity and reliability, and the Year of the Monkey in 2016, when the Year of the Dog arrives on 16th February 2018, it will be the third of three auspicious animals, with another encouraging four-legged farmyard favourite the Year of the Pig on the horizon for 2019.

Chinese New Year's Day is not the first day of the Chinese astrological year but the new moon day of the first lunar month, 26th February 2018. When, in 2015, it marked the turn of the sheep, couples rushed to conceive the year previously (Year of the Horse), fearful that their child would mirror the characteristics of this submissive woolly follower who according to superstition, brings only bad luck, failed marriages and misfortune. Each of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac has its virtues and faults. The unquestionable favourite is the dragon, with the tiger, the horse and the dog closely behind. The Chinese believe these animals signify enthusiasm, fortune, strength of character, strong business sense and much wealth – with the dog being deemed the most trustworthy.
