Palmira is a municipality in the Department of Valle del Cauca. It is located in the eastern bank of the Cauca River, and is part of the metropolitan area of Cali. It is center of great sugar mills, constituting one of the most important commercial, industrial and agricultural centers of the department. Palmira hosts the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), the most important in Colombia and South America, where development research in agricultural productionis carried out. The city is also known as "Colombian agricultural Capital ".
