The Rona postman who walked, sometimes three times a week in all weathers with up to a half hundredweight on his back. The Danish Princess’ s grave the oldest legend on Rona and of course Janet Mackenzie who burned a lamp to give seafarers a guide into the harbour after losing her husband and sons during a storm in 1822. 说明:: 3rd issue. The 150 year old anniversary of the building of the Rona Lighthouse. 历史
The first Rona light was provided by a widow named Janet Mackenzie in the mid 1800s. For many years she burnt a light in the window of her cottage on the beach at Big Harbour, enabling fishing boats to clear the rocks at the harbour entrance. Legend tells that she lost her husband at sea and hoped that the light guide others safely home. Many fishing boats owed their safety from storms to the widow’s lights. She received £20 from the Northern Lighthouse Board as a reward for her ‘praiseworthy exertions’.

In 1853 the Commissioner’s Engineer David Stevenson prepared a list of 45 possible sites to complete a lighthouse system for the Scottish coasts. The board prioritised 8 sites, including Rona to light the north entrance to the sound between Skye and the mainland. It was lit on 10th November 1857, and commemorates it’s 150th anniversary in 2007

The sheltered bay of Rona’s Acarseid Mhor, or Big Harbour, is a popular destination for yachts from all over the world during the summer season. Rona provides a pontoon, safe mooring and facilities ashore to encourage access for all to one of Scotland’s most beautiful anchorages.  The 2010 local carriage stamps (40,40, 60, 60p and £1.00) feature the variety of yachts that visit the island. The accompanying postcard shows Drascombe boats: a traditional-styled sailing boat with distinctive red sails designed by a former Royal Navy officer John Watkinson to follow the three principles of safety, robustness & fun. Those pictured overleaf are the Dutch Drascombe Owner’s Circle leaving the Harbour during their 2010 Scotland trip.
