- At 3,798 m, the Gro-glockner is the highest point in Austria, between Carinthia and Tyrol. This marked peak, in rocks belonging to a green shale facies, belongs to the Glockner range located in the center of the Hohe Tauern, and is considered the most important peak of the Eastern Alps. Since the first recognitions in the 18th century and the first ascent by four climbers of a great expedition organized by Prince-Bishop Salm-Reifferscheidt-Krautheim in 1800, the Gro-glockner has played an important role in the development mountaineering. It has remained very important for tourism in the region, and represents a goal appreciated by mountaineers, with 5,000 ascents per year.
