"Electric Empath" is a long form improvisational piece for alto saxophone and electronics. I recorded this on December 8, 2024 using one take for the electronics, followed by one take for the alto saxophone.
For the electronic portion, I used three analog synthesizers simultaneously – Korg Volca Keys, Arturia MiniBrute, and SOMA Laboratory Lyra-8. The Volca Keys and the MiniBrute were both fed through the Lyra-8 so that the Lyra-8’s onboard effects would be applied to all three signals.
The piece has three distinct sections:
Section 1: 00:00 – 17:00. Builds to high tumult; frightening (natural minor / aeolian scale).
Section 2: 17:00 – 31:48. Calm and mournful (harmonic minor scale).
Section 3: 31:48 – 41:56. Builds to medium tumult; hopeful (dominant 7th / mixolydian scale).
Instrumentation: Alto Saxophone; Lyra-8; MiniBrute; Volca Keys.

- Bereits 2003 aufgenommen und 2024 wieder entdeckt. Diese Aufnahmen fand ich auf Anregung von Ephraim Wegner beim durchstöbern meiner Archive. Ich war fasziniert, jedoch gab es keine Informationen außer den Dateinamen “Tenda Maurer Schückens Hillmann”. So erinnerte ich mich schnell an die Konzerte, die im NEUE MUSIK SOMMER in Waldbröl stattfanden und begann zu recherchieren. Wir haben frei improvisiert, musizierten ohne jegliche Probe oder Absprache und hatten in dieser Besetzung nie vorher gespielt. Christoph Hillmann nutzte fast ausschließlich Live Elektronik und umhüllte uns mit komplexen interaktiven Klängen, die er mit Bewegungen seiner Hand im Raum steuern konnte. Toru Tenda, Rainald Schückens und ich fanden dazu diese wunderbaren akustischen Farben. Für mich haben diese 6 Tracks eine fantastische inner Ruhe und große poetische Kraft. Sie sind Zeitzeugnis einer offenen Begegnung von 4 unterschiedlich geprägten Musikern, die sich frei von Schubladen des musikalischen Geschäfts bewegt haben.
