- "This release documents the October 2025 improvised music tour I went on. Adam Arritola wanted me to come out and play his ambitious "Avant Garde A Clue 2" festival, so I asked him to book me a few shows to get there. As such, I made three solo drum performances in Kent, Erie, and Rochester. After that, I headed East and teamed up with various peers for the rest of the trip.
I find the format to be extremely challenging, since I am not convinced of the inherent value of the approach. There's all kinds of technique which can be displayed, but the limited palette of the conventional drum kit is not something I think easily lends itself to sustaining most people's interest over longer durations. It's hard to do.
Are drum solos even music? I'm not sure many are. I do my best to fulfill the artistic contract by my own aesthetic standards, at least. I regularly extend my sonic options with a bag of carefully curated junk I can use to alter my kit's timbre. I have developed some extended techniques to execute the bizarre designs I envision. I am interested in action, movement, contrast, surprise, and iconoclasm. I am trying to do something that isn't ordinary. I push hard and I feel like I need to keep trying to surprise myself, first and foremost.
My general approach to free improvisation is devoted to generating spontaneous, original structure as well as insuring an implied undercurrent of constant momentum and tension. I utilize the same devices in my improvisations as I would in my set compositions, but the risky invention of the moment compensates for the wisdom of deliberation. In free improvisation, I am under no obligation to meet any predetermined rules. The end result is totally up to me. I just make art I would want to hear. I want to display energy, speed, and ingenuity.
I tend to read the room somewhat. In Kent, I was playing a noisy dive bar and I wanted to bring some kind of fun party vibe. In Erie, the gallery space was resonant and felt I needed to utilize more space and nuance. In Rochester, I had a fixed 15 minute slot and wanted to do something grand and intense in the festival chapel space. The Brooklyn fragment at the end of this program was my solo spot made during a fiery quartet set after 25 solid minutes of hardcore free jazz weightlifting. Every night SHOULD be different, and it can be. You just play what you're supposed to.
My personal language has been developed over the last 35 years through constant playing and listening. I acknowledge the heavy influence on my concept by people like Paul Lovens, Beaver Harris, Charles K. Noyes, Rashied Ali, David Moss, Andrew Cyrille, Jamie Muir, Phillip Wilson, Tony Oxley, Ed Blackwell, Takeo Moriyama, Sunny Murray, Barry Altschul, Ronald Shannon Jackson, John Stevens, and Masahiko Togashi. The artifacts left behind by these giants helped me to form the primary inspiration for my own efforts within the sphere.
I am alive. I think. Lately, I am really struggling to make sense of this world. When I show up to play, I am putting myself on the line every single time. If I thought I had laurels to rest on, I'd probably opt out of that. I hope you can relate to these sounds I make. I'm trying to be as honest and true as possible about it."
