André Hourtal (1911–1986) & Juliette Tramesaygues (1916–1996)
André Hourtal, my great-grandfather on my mother’s side, passed away when I was two years old, so I never really got the chance to know him. From what I've heard, he was a refined, cultivated, genuine and kind gentleman with remarkable social skills. He managed the Orchestre Symphonique du Capitole de Toulouse for many years. A French horn player himself, he would often step in when musicians couldn’t attend. While helping my grandmother move a year ago, I stumbled upon an old iron cookie box filled with tapes bearing his name. Among the pile, mostly opera recordings, were tapes of some kind of live gatherings where he would introduce music and artists to an audience before playing tracks. I digitized the tapes, carefully cleaned the damaged audio, and edited his words into several hours of material. His voice now opens the album from the hereafter, in the intro track Cicatrices.
Juliette Tramesaygues, known as "Alberte", my great-grandmother, was fierce, unapologetic, clever, funny, and wildly talented. She would sing all the time at home, play the harmonica, the banjo, really any string instrument she could get her hands on. She spent her days at the piano, chain-smoking unfiltered brown Gauloises cigarettes. She passed away at 80, with one lung, a cigarette in one hand, an oxygen mask in the other, telling doctors to f*ck off. Gangsta. But thinking back as an adult, I realize she could’ve blown up the whole damn hospital. Gangsta, but a little reckless. Well, those were different times, as they say.
She was everything to me, the person who taught me how to read and who, along with my parents, introduced me to music and culture. The second track is for her. I created all the harmonics using her own harmonica (which I found the same day as André’s tapes) and a piano. The intro is a screwed 8-bit version of Des Chiffres et des Lettres, an old French TV show we used to watch together after school.
I love you so, so much, my Mémé, you can’t imagine. You were the first rebel I ever met. You were punk when Johnny Rotten was still in his daddy’s bollocks, and you helped shape the man I became. I still think of you every single day, almost 30 years after your passing. You are part of me forever. I hope there’s an afterlife, so one day we will carry on with this beautiful relationship we had. I want to play you everything I’ve created while you were away.
Or maybe you reincarnated and you’ll experience life & dance to this album as a new child.
Who knows? No one.
While I was composing this album, my six years relationship, with the person I thought I’d grow old with, was ending. This record also became a reflection on past relationships, my mistakes and the long path to self-improvement. Learning to respect myself and my vision of commitment, setting boundaries with people and pushing my limits musically. An allegory of the tumultuous climb toward healing, symbolized by the Pic du Midi, the mountain I saw from my bedroom window as a child, while reconnecting with old memories of my great-grandmother.
It would mean the world to me if you take the time to listen to this piece of music, which is quite literally a piece of my heart.
