these coins are also called "three half pence"
It followed the factors of two that the other coins followed. As of 1849 with the florin, there would be a half florin (shilling) a half shilling (6d) half of that is the 3d and then half again the three-halfpenny coin! It was logically a half threepence. What can be said is that the idea didn't catch on.
