The obverse: in the center — the Emblem of the Bank of Russia (the two-headed eagle with wings down), lower — the semicircular inscription — «БАНК РОССИИ» (Bank of Russia) framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «ДВА РУБЛЯ» (Two Rubles), at the bottom — the year of issue «2001», the letters to the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, to the right — the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.
The reverse: to the left — a portrait of V.I. Dal, lover — a goose-quill, to the right — an opened book with an inscription in five lines on it: «ТОЛКОВЫЙ СЛОВАРЬ ЖИВОГО ВЕЛИКОРУССКОГО ЯЗЫКА» (The Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language), lower — a picture featuring three small figures: a balalaika player and two folk dancers, an the bottom — a manuscript with the facsimile signature of the lexicographer and the dates in two lines «1801» «1872».
