The dinornitidae or moas are an extinct family of prehistoric birds that lived in New Zealand. Ten species that vary in size are known, as we mentioned before they did not fly and became extinct 500 years ago because of human beings.
The coin has been produced by the private mint Kunstprägeanstalt GmbH of BH Mayer and has been designed by the New Zealand artist Dave Burke. On the back it shows a stylized image of the moa in a landscape with snowy peaks in the background and surrounded by bushes in the lower part. Above is the name of the animal and the facial value of the piece as the only inscriptions.
