Hi, I have been collecting stamps since 1981. The main thing I am working on is building an "old time" style hinge-mounted worldwide collection of postally used, affordable stamps with the main themes being (1) wanting at least a handful of stamps from each modern country and its predecessor countries and regions (2) that handful being representative of different eras including up to around year 2000 (3) in addition wanting lots of definitive stamps from the 30 countries that seem to me larger by land, economy or population, or most connected with me (4) going broader than that into commemorative stamps I like generally, and right up to date, for 15 countries I am prioritising being Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States (5) a bit of an extra line in liking thematics around frogs, amphibians generally, photography, motorbikes, butterflies and places I have been where that fits broadly with my worldwide collection plan.
I like my stamps to have been through the post and to be in good condition but since affordability is also important I compromise sometimes and accept mint or CTO especially for thematics, and less good condition for older stamps. I don't generally set out to acquire different varieties except perhaps affordable ones of the UK and France, but I do try and identify and keep the ones I already have from my 15 priority countries.
My collection has been founded on post family and friends have saved for me, stamps I have bought and a few small old time collections I have absorbed, including my Dad's childhood collection from the 1940s, with most swaps I have done just being face to face. However I have been loading my swaps onto Colnect and have just started to do exchanges so I am hoping this will be a good experience.
