Introduction

The Micronesian Dollar was not an official circulating currency. The Federated States of Micronesia used – and still uses – the United States Dollar (USD) as its sole legal tender. The term “Micronesian dollar” appeared only on a small number of commemorative numismatic coins, issued for not for general circulation.

Commemorative coins denominated as 1 Micronesian Dollar were produced in limited quantities and distributed solely as numismatic products. These issues were bimetallic, with plain or smooth edges, medal alignment, and raised rims. Design themes included national motifs and portraits of notable figures such as 6th President Joseph John Urusemal and Pope John Paul II. Weights ranged from 8.6 to 8.7 grams, with diameters between 27.6 mm and 35 mm, depending on the issue year (2004 and 2011). These coins served only as collectible items and never entered everyday monetary use.
