Currencies/Gibraltar crown

From Collectors Collecting Wiki

Introduction

The Gibraltar Crown is a commemorative coin denomination issued by the Government of Gibraltar since 1967. Though denominated as “One Crown,” it serves primarily as a collector’s and commemorative issue, reflecting Gibraltar’s distinct coinage identity under the Gibraltar pound, which is pegged to the British pound sterling.

History

The first Gibraltar Crown was minted in 1967 to mark Gibraltar’s growing recognition of its local governance and heritage. Modeled after the British crown coin, it carried Gibraltar’s coat of arms with the Castle and Key motif — an enduring symbol of the territory. Over the following decades, the crown became a recurring issue for significant occasions such as royal jubilees, anniversaries, and national celebrations.

From the 1980s onward, commemorative issues were produced by the Gibraltar Mint and Pobjoy Mint, featuring increasingly detailed and thematic designs. Though officially legal tender in Gibraltar, crowns have always been struck mainly for presentation, proof sets, and collectors rather than general circulation. Colnect Item Picture

Coins

Gibraltar Crowns are usually struck in cupro-nickel or silver and issued in a standard size and weight similar to traditional British crowns. They typically measure about 38 mm in diameter and weigh approximately 28 grams. Designs often display portraits of the reigning monarch—such as Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III—on the obverse, with Gibraltar’s coat of arms, local wildlife, or commemorative imagery on the reverse.

Over time, the crown series expanded to include proof and limited-edition versions, some minted in gold or tri-metallic alloys. Later issues also incorporated modern engraving and frosted finishes, emphasizing their collectible appeal rather than everyday currency use.

Currency

The Gibraltar Crown belongs to the Gibraltar pound (GIP) currency system, which maintains parity with the British pound sterling (GBP). While officially valued at 25 new pence following decimalization, crown coins are primarily non-circulating legal tender. They share equivalence in monetary value with British issues but circulate exclusively within Gibraltar.

Legacy

The Gibraltar Crown symbolizes Gibraltar’s monetary autonomy within the British Commonwealth. Its recurring commemorative issues celebrate Gibraltar’s cultural heritage, royal milestones, and historic identity, making the crown an enduring part of modern numismatics.
