Functional Card

A Functional Card is a plastic card used for a specific function, for example, a discount card, loyalty card, membership card, internet access card etc. While phone cards, used mainly for telecommunication, are the most popular, cards used for different functions are collected as well.

Browsing the Catalog

The Colnect Functional Cards Catalog can easily be filtered from the Catalog drop-down menu by the following properties:

  • Countries: The country the functional card was issued in.
  • Industries: An area, in which the functional card is used.
  • Functions: The purpose of the functional card. Currently the following options are available:
  • Access and Identification: A card, which enables entrance to various facilities, allows access to different projects and more. Such cards may often be used to identify the cardholder.
  • Arcade
  • Code Card
  • Copy Print and Fax
  • Discount: A plastic or paper card that allows the holder to get discounts on the prices of some products or services.
  • Electronic money
  • Exhibition and Demo
  • Hospital
  • Insurance: A card that allows anyone who is insured by to receive a compensation for a loss, damage, illness or death in return for payment of a premium.
  • Internet Access: A card which enables prepaid access to the Internet.
  • Loyalty: A card issued by a supermarket or store to its customers and used to accumulate credit points awarded for money spent in the store, which may be used for future purchases or getting discounts.
  • Luggage Storage
  • Luggage Tag: A card with the name and contact details written on it, attached to a piece of luggage to locate its owner if lost in transit.
  • Membership: A card certifying a membership of a club, society or other organisation for a given period.

  • Prepayment: A type of a card for spending money that have already been loaded onto the card in advance.

  • TV Access: A card, which enables the access to television.

  • Warranty: A card which gives guarantee or promise by one party to the other party that some definite facts or conditions are true or will happen.
  • Systems: The type of an information carrier used by a card. Options are:
  • Years: The first year of issue, if known.
  • Face Values: The value of the functional card as printed on the card. If the face value is not mentioned, None is used.
  • Currencies: The currency of the functional card, if not stated the No Face Value is used.
  • Themes: The motif themes on the functional card. Multiple themes can be selected for one card. Only the themes from the Colnect Global Cross-Category Themes List can be used.
  • Catalogs: Catalogs with extensive information about functional cards. Right now, there are 6 different catalogs available on Colnect.
  • Recently updated: Functional cards where at least one piece of information was changed in the last 30 calendar days. The last change applied is used to determine the change age of the card. This can be further filtered by the last 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 calendar days.
  • Newly added: Functional cards added to the Colnect Functional Cards Catalog within the last 30 calendar days. This can be further filtered by the last 1, 3, 7, 14, and 30 calendar days.
  • Import Log: A list of all New Item Forms (NIFs) that have been imported to the Colnect Functional Cards category since 2013. It shows date, the person who created the NIF, the coordinator who imported it, the number of functional cards imported, and the country of the functional card. Please note that it is not possible to find the functional cards that were in the NIF, this information is not stored in the database.


The catalog also contains other properties to further describe the functional cards:

  • Name (60 characters): The name of the functional card.
  • Business: A company that issued a card.
  • Catalog Name: The name of the catalog used for the catalog code. Currently Colnect Codes Catalog (Colnect's own numbering system) is mostly used.
  • Catalog Code: The Colnect catalog code consists of the ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2 country code where the functional card was issued, business abbreviation, hyphens and a consecutive 3-digit number.

Example: DE-AIRB-005 (DE: ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2 for Germany, Federal Republic -: Hyphen AIRB: Business abbreviation for Air Berlin 005: Consecutive number).

  • Variant: If a functional card is marked as a variant, you can get a list of all variants of this functional card by clicking on Click to see variants.
  • Description: A detailed description of the functional card. This may include information on how to distinguish variants.
  • Front Picture and Back Picture: Both front and back of the functional card should be pictured, as the back often contains important information about the issuer, author, motif, number and hints to determine the age. Please follow the Picture Guidelines.
